Tom Hanks was a great Castaway on DID today. Of course, he’s been Cast Away before, in the 2000 film. On DID he spoke about his “vagabond” childhood and moving house 10 times in five years due to his dad’s job as a chef. This was an emotional interview and he really gave himself over to the whole experience and was ably guided by the excellent Kirsty Young. Tom comes across as a genuinely warm guy, a lot like most of the characters he plays on screen. His stories behind his musical choices were also illuminating and this is one of my favourite DID’s.

Tom Hanks’ choices:

  1. Dean Martin & Line Renaud – Relax-Ay-Voo
  2. The Beatles – There’s A Place
  3. Dusty Springfield – Doodlin
  4. Strauss – Also Sprach Zarathustra
  5. Alfred Newman, Ken Darby – How The West Was Won
  6. Tallking Heads – Once In A Lifetime
  7. LL Cool J – Mama Said Knock You Out
  8. Derek and the Dominos – Layla
